When you look at a clear sky or a white wall, do you see tiny particles or shadows or threads that move when your eyes move?
These are called floaters
They aren’t actually outside your eyes — they’re tiny clumps inside the gel-like part of your eyeball called the vitreous. This gel helps your eye keep its shape. As you grow or as your eyes change, little bits of that gel can clump together, and when light comes into your eye, it casts a shadow of those clumps on your retina (the part that sees), and that’s what you see as floaters.
They usually aren’t anything to worry about, and most people get them. But they can be annoying.
I came across this video where Dr. Allen explains how you may get rid of them:
He recommended eating pineapple. Pineapple can help reduce eye floaters because it contains something called bromelain — a natural enzyme. Bromelain may help break down the collagen that causes the floaters inside the vitreous.
His recommendation is based on a study on 388 participants with floaters. The study found that:
Eating one slice (100-120 grams) of pineapple a day for 3 months reduced floaters by 55%.
Eating two slices (200-240 grams) of pineapple a day for 3 months reduced floaters by 66%.
Eating three slices (300-360 grams) of pineapple a day for 3 months reduced floaters by 75%.
So I wanted to put pineapple to the test. I toss about 15 different fruits and vegetables in a food processor for breakfast, so adding pineapple to this is easy.
For about one month, I have added one slice of pineapple a day to my breakfast.
When I started, I had about 10 noticeable floaters.
Today they are a lot smaller. I believe some of them also disappeared.
Given this positive result, I will continue to eat pineapple daily. I will give a further report at some point in the future. It would be amazing if they would disappear completely.
What’s next?
Next week, I will give you an update on what’s going on in the world of longevity
For any new readers: I am trying to live to (at least) 151. To get there, I follow 2 main principles:
Live a super-healthy life (based on what science deems positive for longevity)
Measure what’s going on in my body and tune any metrics that are off to become optimal
I also summarize interesting news and stories from the longevity space. And I share everything worth sharing with you.
If you enjoyed this newsletter, I would be very grateful if you gave it a ‘like’ (the ❤️ at the top).
Have a good day,
Johan
